Love on the Rocks

Dear Church,

Yesterday, I sent some ideas about how we can reach others while sheltering in place through the technology that is now available to us. Technology can be a helpful tool in encouraging others, but it’s not necessary. I’m amazed at the many ways creative people can inspire others. On my morning walk today, I passed a rock, no bigger than 2-3 inches long, lying on the sidewalk. I almost didn’t see it. In fact, I passed it, and then my brain registered that I had seen something out of the ordinary, so I went back.

Someone named Bob, (not me, another Bob) took the time to glue paper on the rock, and then he wrote an encouraging note on it to people who passed. Since we’ve been sheltering in place, I’ve seen so many people out walking, and Bob placed this rock at a strategic intersection where many would see it. The message is not overtly Christian, but it is encouraging. It shows just a small way that we too can help others who may be stressed and fearful in these troubling times.

Colossians 2:2 says this: “My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ.” 1 Thess. 5:11 says this: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

If technology intimidates you, there are still many ways to help others through this crisis. Be creative and have fun. As Bob encouraged me today, we can encourage others if we look for opportunities.
